Emotional Healing: What It Actually Is - and How It Really Works

Most people think emotional healing means getting rid of the difficult feelings. That’s not healing. That’s suppression with better marketing. Becca Williams - credentialed Emotional Liberation practitioner, plant medicine facilitator, and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist - explores what emotions actually are, how we lose our way with them, and what it takes to come home to yourself.

Emotional Healing: What It Actually Is - and How It Really Works

What emotions actually are

We’ve been taught that emotions are problems.

Too much feeling = weakness. Difficult emotions = something wrong with you. The goal, most of us learned, is to manage them, suppress them, get over them, or rise above them.

But that’s not what emotions are. Not even close.

Emotions are your sensory system. As precise and essential as sight or hearing. They are a source of information, designed to help you avoid trouble, heal the past, and access the peace and happiness that are the goal of every human life.

Every emotion carries a message. Anxiety is telling you something. Anger is telling you something. Shame, Grief, Loneliness, each one is pointing toward something real. Something that needs your attention. Not your suppression.

The problem isn’t that you feel too much. The problem is that no one taught you how to listen to what you’re feeling.

How we get lost – two ways

There are two ways we lose our relationship with our own emotional truth.

The first is losing trust in ourselves. As children, we depend on others for everything: their approval, their protection, their version of what’s real. We absorb their stories about who we are, what we deserve, what’s possible. Over time, those stories become the water we swim in. We stop questioning whether they’re true.

The second is becoming a prisoner of the thinking mind.

The mind runs on repetition. The same thoughts loop, day after day, until they feel like facts. ‘I ruined it. Nobody really cares. I’m too much. I’m not enough. This is just how I am.’ Each thought pulls a feeling with it – anxiety, frustration, shame, loneliness – until the loop becomes so familiar we mistake it for reality.

But it isn’t reality. It’s a story. And stories can change.

The return – learning to listen differently

When you stop deferring to the mind’s loop and start listening to your heart, your Soul, your felt sense, you encounter a completely different conversation.

That’s where the truth is. That’s where the answers are.

Your emotions are carrying a signal from somewhere deeper than the thinking mind. They speak the language of the heart and Soul. They’re intense, and they ask for your attention, not your analysis. This isn’t something you learn intellectually. It’s something you cultivate through practice, an intuitive capacity that grows as you use it.

When you learn how to stay with a feeling rather than push it away, even an uncomfortable one, it will tell you what it needs to tell you. What’s wrong. What you need. What to do. The emotion isn’t the problem. It’s the messenger.

And when you learn to respond from your intuition, not from the reactive pattern but from what you actually know to be true, something shifts. You take the wheel. Confidence returns. Trust in yourself returns. Even when it has been absent for a very long time.

In short, the secret is that by learning to listen to your emotions, you will be able to handle whatever life brings.

Who this work is for

This work meets you wherever you are.

Maybe something specific happened and you want to move through it cleanly rather than carry it. Or maybe it’s less specific: Anxiety that never fully lifts, Depression that keeps circling back, Anger that flares without obvious cause.

Maybe you learned early that feeling was dangerous, so you stopped. And now something in you knows it’s time to come back.

Maybe there’s pain from the past that keeps showing up in the present, in your reactions, your relationships, your sense of what you deserve. Trauma doesn’t stay in the past. It lives in the body until it’s worked through.

Or maybe you’ve done significant work already, therapy, workshops, inner work of all kinds, and you’re ready to go deeper. To build on everything you’ve learned and take it somewhere new.

And for teachers, healers, and facilitators, understanding these emotions at a lived level changes how you hold space for others.

Whatever brings you here, the entry point doesn’t matter as much as the willingness to begin. All of us have been poorly taught about emotions. Learning to work with them skillfully is one of the most sophisticated things a human being can do.

This is a skill. Like any skill, it develops with practice and patience. Don’t expect mastery on day one. Expect progress and trust that every step forward counts.

What I work with instead

In our Emotional Liberation® work, we start by giving the thinking brain what it needs: a complete reframe of what emotions actually are, where they come from, and what they’ve been trying to do. The subconscious is extraordinarily intelligent. The patterns that formed in childhood were brilliant adaptations. The problem isn’t that they’re wrong. It’s that they’re working from old data.

Then comes the experiential work: psycho-spiritual inquiry, body-based practices (movement, breath, sound), and optionally the inclusion of plant medicine, the tools that drop you into your deep inner knowing, beneath the story the mind has been telling. Not analysis. Direct contact with what’s actually there.

Under Emotional Liberation, you will experience a radical improvement in your relationship with your emotions, as well as a dramatic decrease in the time you spend feeling bad. You’ll find an empowered new understanding of emotions, practical tools for how to use them, and simple techniques to safely resolve heavy feelings so you can feel relief and live lighter.

Although you must do the work for yourself, know that you have the support of time-tested wisdom and the successful experience of many people who have come before you.

Ultimately, you will come to trust yourself, to trust your feelings, and to know that you have everything you need within yourself.

What the research says

The World Health Organization has called for a fundamental transformation of mental health systems worldwide, recognizing that current approaches are insufficient and that broader, more integrated strategies are needed.[1]

A 2024 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that mind-body practices integrating intentional movement with inner awareness consistently reduced anxiety and depression, confirming what wisdom traditions have long held: the body is a primary site of emotional healing, not just the mind.[2]

Research on neuroplasticity further confirms that the nervous system is malleable throughout life. A systematic review found that meditation and mindfulness practices induce measurable brain changes, including increased cortical thickness and reduced amygdala reactivity, supporting the formation of new neural pathways and the loosening of old reactive patterns.[3]

“Your emotions aren’t obstacles to the life you want. They’re the map. Learn to read them and everything changes.”

Plant medicine and emotional healing

Traditional ceremonial use of psilocybin and cannabis for emotional healing and consciousness work predates the clinical research by centuries. The science is now catching up.

Both medicines, when used with clear intention and skilled support, can lower the defenses that keep difficult emotional material hidden, creating access to what’s been stored beneath conscious awareness.

Psilocybin temporarily quiets the default mode network, the brain’s loop of self-criticism and habitual narrative, while simultaneously promoting neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new pathways. This creates a window in which the deeper work of emotional healing can take root more readily.

Cannabis, used ceremonially with clear emotional intention, can create enough safety for what’s been defended against to surface, to be witnessed, worked with, and released.

Plant medicine is always optional in this work. When it is included, dosing, contraindications, preparation, and integration are all part of what we cover together. You go in fully prepared.

Where healing meets real life

Emotional healing isn’t a destination. It’s a practice and it changes everything it touches.

It changes how you respond to stress. How you handle conflict. How you talk to yourself in the moments when things go wrong. Whether you reach for the old numbing strategies or stay present with what’s actually happening.

It changes your relationships, because you stop reacting from old wounds and start responding from who you actually are.

One of the realities I want to share with you about this work: in the beginning, a deep inner awareness of your own patterns will start to emerge and outpace your outside life. You’ll see what’s been driving the reactions, the defenses, the hiding. But the relationships, the dynamics, the roles you’ve played, those don’t update overnight.

This is what some of my students have come to call the shaken snowglobe. The inner landscape is shifting. Old defenses are loosening. But the outer life hasn’t caught up yet. That gap can feel destabilizing. Even frightening.

This is a vital part of your transformation. The nervous system is learning something new. And that takes time, repetition, and support.

The Emotional Liberation work harmonizes with your needs, whether you’re navigating a specific difficult emotion, recovering from a psychedelic experience, healing from trauma, or simply ready to live with more freedom, clarity, and trust in yourself.

Either way, you don’t navigate it alone.

Group masterclasses, trainings, retreats, and ceremonial gatherings create a dynamic that accelerates healing in ways one-to-one work simply can’t replicate – people learn from one another, and there is profound medicine in witnessing and being witnessed. Teachers and facilitators often find this work particularly valuable – understanding these emotions in yourself makes you more effective in teaching them to others.

Common Questions

Questions people often ask

How long does emotional healing take?+

It depends on what you’re healing from and how long it’s been running. Some people feel significant shifts early in the work, something opens that’s been closed for years. For others, particularly those healing from early trauma or long-held patterns of Shame or Depression, the work is slower and more layered.

What I can tell you is that healing is not linear. And the capacity for change doesn’t have an expiration date. Emotional fluency is a skill. It builds with practice, patience, and the right support. Trust the process and trust yourself.

Can I do this work without plant medicine?+

Plant medicine is always optional – and when it is included, many find that it can be a potent tool. Used with clear intention and skilled support, it can accelerate access to the emotional material that’s been defended against. Cannabis and psilocybin are the medicines I work with – and everything you need to know before going in, we cover together.
