Your Emotions Are a Spiritual Map

By Becca Williams  |  April 2, 2026

Jung knew it. Your soul does too. Here’s what that means.

Carl Jung, one of the most visionary minds in the history of human consciousness, understood something that most of Western medicine still hasn’t caught up to: after a certain point in life, our deepest struggles aren’t psychological.

They’re spiritual.

Jung essentially taught us that our emotions are a spiritual map, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of our own existence.

As Jung himself put it:

“After the age of thirty, all psychological problems are spiritual in nature.”

Exploring the unconscious

Jung, actually a student of Freud, is said to have rescued psychiatry and psychology from the grip of Freudian atheism.

He spent his career exploring the unconscious, the language of dreams, and what he called the archetypes – the universal patterns that live beneath our everyday awareness.

He wrote extensively about the nature of the healthy psyche, what he understood to be the Soul, and how deeply it requires a connection with the Divine – whatever that looks like for you.

I refer to it as the Higher Self.

What Jung found, again and again, through his work with patients and clients, was that suffering has a source. And that source is a sense of separation from the Divine, that is – a disconnection from the Higher Self.

He came to understand how profoundly that sense of separation ignites health issues, emotional pain, and a life that feels somehow off-course.

I personally see many who are bewildered by difficult emotions that arise for them in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Often, they apply the term “midlife crisis” to the confusion that they are feeling. “I think I’m going through a midlife crisis and it feels awful!”

That’s not a “midlife crisis”

But what I’ve learned in my experience as an emotions therapist, is that when we’re older, traumas can start to come back to the surface again.

And they can often turn into anxiety disorders. For so many years, a person can push these unruly emotions back. We can distract ourselves from these feelings that have wanted to come up from the subconscious to find healing. We avoid it by diving into school, dive into work, dive into relationships – always doing doing, doing.

So then we come into a chapter of our lives where we have some time and we’re no longer intensely doing. All of a sudden the subconscious mind-body spurs on these negative feelings, these bodily sensations, and these past traumas and says “hey is it time we dealt with this now?”

I wouldn’t call this a midlife crisis. I see it as Jung describes. He elegantly illuminated the interrelatedness of spirituality and psychology. He pioneered the understanding that spiritual wisdom is not separate from healing, it is the healing. It is the source of what restores us.

Western science has given us many tools. But when it comes to the Soul, it goes quiet. It doesn’t speak that language.

As a clinician, I’ve seen this limit again and again: Western medicine can take us far, but it has little to offer when the wound is spiritual in nature.

That’s the gap that my emotional release work is designed to fill.

Rather than working around our emotions or pushing them down, we move directly into them, identifying the feelings that are quietly running our lives. We come to understand why we are struggling, and do the processing and release work through a step-by-step process attuned to each person’s individual needs.

When we can do that, real breakthroughs become possible. Relationships transform. Old patterns dissolve. A sense of flow returns.

Understanding, interpreting, and releasing your troubling emotions – that is truly the secret to happiness. To awareness. To awakening. To feeling, finally, like you are living the life that was always meant for you.

Here’s something for you

If this resonates, and you’re feeling called to explore your emotions as a pathway, rather than something to avoid, I’ll be holding my free online Elevation Ceremony later this month.

It’s a guided, active, and expressive space to work directly with what’s arising – in a way that supports both emotional and spiritual integration. You’re very welcome to join. You can register here. (It’s aways recorded if you miss it, or wish to experience it again.)

With Love,

Becca

P.S. Really, if you’re recognizing yourself in this, it might be time to meet what’s been asking for your attention. The Elevation Ceremony later this month is there if you feel ready.
