Why regulation is foundational
Everything in emotional healing ultimately comes back to the nervous system. Anxiety, depression, trauma responses, emotional reactivity, numbness, burnout — all of these are, at their core, states of nervous system dysregulation. Building the capacity to regulate is not just one tool among many — it is the foundation on which everything else rests.
Polyvagal theory, developed by Stephen Porges, offers a useful framework. The autonomic nervous system moves between three primary states: the ventral vagal state (safe and social), the sympathetic state (fight-or-flight), and the dorsal vagal state (shutdown/freeze). Most people oscillate between the latter two, rarely accessing the regulated ventral state consistently.
Understanding which state you’re in — and having tools to shift between them — is the beginning of regulation work. Read the full science →
What the research shows
A 2012 meta-analysis in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews found that heart rate variability (HRV) — a key marker of vagal tone — was significantly reduced across anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain conditions, confirming nervous system dysregulation as a transdiagnostic factor.1
Breathwork interventions have been shown to increase HRV significantly, suggesting a direct pathway for voluntarily improving nervous system regulation through breath-based practice.2
A 2023 review in Brain Sciences found that breathwork produced significant improvements in anxiety symptoms in people with clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders across 16 clinical studies.3
“The nervous system is not your enemy. It is your oldest survival system, doing its best with the information it has. Regulation is not about controlling it — it is about teaching it something new.”

How to work with your nervous system
The primary tools Becca uses are: active breathwork (direct regulation of the autonomic nervous system via the vagus nerve), somatic movement and discharge (releasing held activation from the body), and titrated emotional processing (approaching difficult material gradually within the window of tolerance).
These tools are introduced progressively in sessions, with the goal of building an independent regulation practice you can use in daily life. Courses also offer structured learning in nervous system regulation →

Questions people often ask
How does plant medicine support nervous system regulation?+
Plant medicine is always optional – and when it is included, many find that it can be a potent tool. Used with clear intention and skilled support, it can accelerate access to the emotional material that’s been defended against. Cannabis and psilocybin are the medicines I work with – and we cover together everything you need to know before going in.
I understand my emotions intellectually. Why can’t I seem to change them?+
Because understanding and feeling are two different things – and healing happens at the level of feeling.
The nervous system runs its patterns independently of what the thinking mind knows. You can have complete insight into why you react a certain way and still find the same reactions arising. That’s not a failure of intelligence, it’s a description of how the nervous system works. That’s why the Emotional Liberation work engages the nervous system directly – through movement, breath, sound, and psycho-spiritual inquiry.
